Autoclude on fire in SA

Date: 03-03-2008

After having survived a fire in a test chamber, the M045 has impressed all at one of the world's leading names in electrical engineering manufacturers, Pfisterer. Verder Pumps SA (Pty) Ltd recently supplied their first mini peristaltic pump - the M045 manufactured by Autoclude – to the company.

“The compact M045 peristaltic pump is suitable to an extensive range of applications throughout many industries including chemical dosing, sampling and analysis,” says Keith Gass General Manager of Verder Pumps SA. The standard pump has Polycarbonate/ABS blend housing for durability and clear Polycarbonate cover and rotor. “It can handle flow rates up to 40 ml/min,” he adds.

Pfisterer develop and manufacture contact elements and systems for power supply networks such as cable systems, components, overhead lines, and railway catenary systems.

The ‘mini’ pump was supplied to test the resistance to tracking and erosion on powerline transmission insulator material. “A wet, polluted environment is simulated by combining ammonium chloride, a wetting agent and deionised water, which the pump consistently and accurately doses across the rubber surface. The M045 pump doses at 0.6ml/min at 1rpm through a 3.2 diameter tube,” explains Shaun Aitken, chemical engineer at the company.

The remarkable pump is still going strong after having survived a fire that was caused by a poor insulating material, igniting in the testing chamber. Aitken is very impressed with the pump’s resilience, even after the fire was put out with a fire extinguisher it is still working accurately despite a burnt casing.

“Because the M045 is so small and not pressure dependent, it is ideal to use for an exact flow rate required for the testing,” claims Aitken. The pump delivers accurately for the six hour test everyday.

Verder Pumps will be delivering another four M045s to the company shortly.
