NewsVerder offers advice at IPUC
VPSA director Keith Gass explained to delegates attending the International Pump User Conference (IPUC), held in conjunction with AfriWater between 8 - 10 September at Nasrec, how power consumption in pumps can be reduced by improving the design of the process and controlling the interaction between the pump and the process. Gass reported that pump systems are often not designed with both optimal performance and energy conservation in mind. Therefore, it is important to match the pump to the process. He explained that the energy required to drive the pump is directly related to the flow and pressure required, and if pump systems are initially designed on an energy-efficient basis and are correctly specified and operated, the energy savings will often be more than 50%. Gass explains the performance and efficiency improvements of pumps in terms of a systems approach. “For cost-effective operation and maintenance of pumping systems, attention must be paid not only to individual pumps, but to the system as a whole. A system approach to optimising a pumping system analyses both the supply and demand sides of the system and how they interact,” he says.
